How to Enjoy Patio Season Without Blowing Your Budget

[ 0 ] June 7, 2012

Is there any greater pleasure than relaxing in a patio on a hot summer’s day? Throw in a cold drink with a few good friends and a patio can become paradise. Just in time for the warmer weather, we’ve assembled a few tips for the patio-goer who’s looking to save a few bucks.

Pregame

Enjoying a drink or two at home before going out is a well-worn tactic for the frugal partier. Hey, there’s no shame in doing it! Especially when you won’t need to spend that extra dough at the bar.

Butter Up Your Bartender

Your bartender should be your best friend. Be friendly, tip well and he’ll be sure to take care of you. I made nice with a bartender at one of my local dives and he gave me a heads up on an upcoming free cider night (which, by the way, was awesome). Just don’t expect him to let your tab slide.

Educate Yourself

Study the menus, memorize the specials and take advantage of Happy Hours. Google is your friend, too. If you want to find the best cheap eats and drinks in your city, do a search (Toronto.com has its own article). Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

Say Yes to Long Island Iced Teas

These particular drinks might  cost than a simple pint, but there is one magic ingredient you can’t ignore: a higher alcohol content.  One of these will put you away just as well as a couple of beers would. Plus, Long Island Iced Teas taste like heaven.

Say No to Cover Charges

Most bars with patios don’t charge a cover unless there’s a big sporting event or holiday going down. However, those that regularly charge a cover? Just say no. Covers don’t make sense when you’re on a budget.

Drinking Is Optional

Aren’t bar patios about enjoying company with a date or friends? Even so, there’s nothing wrong with having just one pint and getting refills of water.

What are your frugal tips for enjoying outdoor bar patios on a budget?

Top 10 Father’s Day Gifts Under $30

[ 0 ] May 24, 2012

It was cute in third grade, but in 2012 your house made out of popsicles sticks is no longer a viable Father’s Day gift. So what can you get to dad and ensure that he’ll actually use, wear or appreciate it? And what if you’re on a budget?

We’ve scrambled up 10 of the best Father’s Day gift ideas to help you get inspired. Best of all, none will cost you more than $30:

1. ExiTool Automotive Rescue Tool

$24.99

This ThinkGeek gadget is for the dads who are, shall we say, always mindful of danger. Especially when it comes to cars. This handy tool easily clips into seatbelts and, should you become trapped, can cut just as easily through them.

Top 10 Mother’s Day Gifts

[ 0 ] May 10, 2012

Mother’s Day. T-minus three days. Have you done your shopping yet? No? Don’t panic. Shopping for Mother’s Day is easier than you think. We’ve assembled ten great gift ideas for you to let mom know you really appreciate her.

1. Flowers

One word: duh! Don’t think of sending flowers on Mother’s Day as trite, there’s a reason why it’s a cherished tradition. A beautiful bouquet is as beautiful as being a mother, so why not pair them up?

Some great flower coupons: 1800Flowers; ProFlowers, FTD.

2. Candles

Candles are appealing for many reasons: flattering light, pleasing scents and they always look good on a mantle. Particularly beneficial for moms with pet dogs.

Some great candles coupons: Crabtree & Evelyn.

3. Gift Baskets

Just like there are all different types of mothers, there are an equally diverse range of gift baskets. Fruit, wine, chocolate, tea, coffee, spa, gourmet… oh, the list goes on. There truly is something for every mom (as long as it can fit in a cute basket).

Some great gift basket coupons: FTD, Harry and David.

4. Spa Treatment

If you want to treat mom to a relaxing spa experience, you can go a couple of routes, depending on her personality. If she doesn’t like to be fussed over, consider at-home spa products and skincare. Otherwise, grab her a pass at the local day spa!

Some great spa coupons: Spa Wish, SpaFinder.

5. Sweets

Sugar is perhaps the safest bet when it comes to a fabulous Mother’s Day gift. You can go from an assortment of her favourite cookies to a gourmet cake – whatever pleases mama!

Some great sweets coupons: Harry and David.

6. Perfume

You know your mom’s a rose, shouldn’t she be smelling like one, too?

Some great perfume coupons: FragranceNet, Beauty.com, Sephora.

7. Her Favourite Childhood Book

Look, we’re not saying you should emotionally manipulate your mother, but… this would be a great way to do it.

Some great book coupons: Amazon, Indigo, Barnes and Noble.

8. Wine

Hey, it’s Mother’s Day, why not crack open a bottle? Whether it’s a budget wine to make a nice sangria or the finest France has to offer, there’s never a bad time to take a sip with mom.

Some great wine coupons: FTD.

9. Flowering Tea

If she’s not much of a drinker, there’s always a fancy tea set to quench her thirst. For starters, try the simple but pretty Numi Flowering Tea and Glass Teapot.

Some great tea coupons: Flavia.

10. Her Favourite Movie/TV Show

Finally, if all she wants to do is kick back and chill on her big day, now’s the time to indulge in the latest season of The Big C, Top Chef or even the new Blu-ray of that one movie she keeps raving about.

What are you planning on getting your mom this year?

The Pros and Cons of Cross-Border Shopping

[ 2 ] April 30, 2012

If you live near the U.S./Canada border, you’ve probably been at least a little curious about how cross-border shopping works. That’s natural! Sometimes you just can’t find your object of desire in local stores, not to mention the Canadian dollar is currently stronger than the American dollar.

For those who want more information about crossing the border to shop in good old USA, we’ve compiled a helpful list of pros and cons:

Pros

  • Bigger variety of items & unique products
  • Access to U.S.-only stores or stores that have yet to open in Canada (i.e., Target)
  • Certain retailers give Canadians a special discount (varies, always ask if unsure)
  • Lower sales tax in bordering U.S. states
  • Three words: duty free shopping

Cons

  • As of June 1, duty free limits will be increasing. You can read the full list of changes here
  • Tolls & gas, especially if you live farther from the border, can really add up
  • Local Canadian retailers take a significant loss, especially around holidays
  • A 2.5% fee for out-of-country purchases is applied to credit cards from most banks
  • Border wait times can be excruciatingly long

Experiences in cross-border shipping can vary from positive to negative to anything in-between. It’s best to ask friends, relatives, co-workers and anyone else who has done it firsthand.

Have you ever crossed the U.S. border to shop? Tell us about your experiences!
