  • 4 FaBOOless Pun Costumes

    Comment (1) »

Halloween is BY FAR my favorite time of the year.  I’m a bit of a ham, so dressing up and running around comes pretty naturally.  But every year I face the same dilemma: what to be?

I’m a big fan of pun costumes.  When pulled off properly, pun Halloween costumes can be a smash hit, but half-ass it and you’ll spend the entire party explaining what you are.  A failure.

Here’s a few done right, from BuyCostumes.com, all 10% off with coupon (obligatory sales pitch):

    trophy-wifeone-night-standholy-sh#!tbar-fly

    Clockwise from top left:

    Trophy Wife

It helps if you’re a blonde bombshell, but even without the big hair and BOTOX, you make the point with gold lamé. Cost: $34.99.

    One Night Stand

This costume doesn’t just illustrate a funny pun, it means you get to wear a lampshade on your head. It was probably going to happen anyway. Cost: $42.99.

    Bar Fly

Crucial to making this costume work is to always be drinking. We here at FS don’t endorse binge-drinking of course, but we are sticklers for authenticity. (Don’t drink and drive…seriously.) Cost: $29.99.

    Holy S#!t

It’s probably best not to wear this one to a church function. And while you shouldn’t expect to meet your special someone wearing a giant turd, it is good for a laugh. Cost: $39.99.

Don’t forget that a good homemade pun costume is possible, too. If you’re good with the arts and crafts, pull out your scissors and construction paper and give these a try:

    • Cereal Killer: Make a life-sized box of your fave brand and borrow the biggest carving knife you can find. What’s that, blog editor? Okay, okay…make it a rubber knife…
    • God’s Gift To Women: Slap on your nicest duds, tie on a big red bow and attach a card that reads TO: Women  FROM: God. But be prepared for sarcastic laughing unless you’re really, really good-looking.

Halloween costumes with a pun can be difficult to get right. Remember to go big on the visuals, and that if you find yourself explaining it to fellow party-goers more than once, initiate Plan B: run to your host’s bedroom and strip the top sheet off her bed. Cut two eyeholes and voila, old-school ghost! A lampshade wouldn’t hurt either.

Have you heard of any other pun costume ideas? Would you or have you done a funny pun costume?

  • Student on a Budget: Where to Find Textbooks in Canada

    Books 2

It’s that time of year again; time to stock up on texts for university. Dreading the dent it’s gonna leave in your bank count? I don’t blame you. But I can help you!

I was in university for 5 years, and my books were a huge $500 of my budget for the year (sometimes more!) By year three, I found new ways to buy books in Canada on the cheap. Now I’m sharing my tips with you…

    Cheap Used Textbooks at School

    • School bookstore - Most university book stores provide a section on used books at lower prices. The problem is: they can sell out fast, so try getting there at least one month before the semester begins.
    • Hallway Bulletin Boards – Most students are in the same boat as you are: saving up to buy their texts. Some students sell texts they’re done with at a low price to pay for their own books. So keep an eye out for notes on bulletins.

Online Text Book Stores in Canada

Write down all the ISBN numbers of the texts required – it makes online searching faster. Then visit these online book stores to buy books that ship to Canada. And to make things even more affordable, I’ve included coupons for you:

    • Amazon.ca – up to 37% off new textbooks (coupon for free shipping on $39 or more)
    • AbeBooks – up to 90% off new & used books (coupon free domestic shipping on select books)
    • Alibiris – up to 30% off new textbooks (coupon for $10 off $100 or more)

TIP: Do your research before visiting any online bookstore. Use helpful tools like Booksprice.com where you can see the online stores your book is available at plus compare prices!

    Borrow or Rent Your Texts

    • Borrow – Visit the library to see if they offer the texts you need. Most libraries offer renewal options so you can keep the book for longer periods of time. The only downfall with this option is that there will be a limited amount of books offered.
    • Rent – One of the easiest ways to save money on texts is by renting them. eCampus.com lets Canadian students rent their texts for low fees. Better yet, if you have any texts from previous years, you can sell them to eCampus.com and use that cash to rent new ones. Done and done!

    Printable Books or Chapters Online

    • Printable Books – Want to avoid heavy texts all together? Take a load off with help from Project Gutenburg. They offer printable eBooks online for free – yup, free!  All they ask is that you leave a small donation that you can afford so that they can keep providing this free service.
    • Printable Chapters - If you’re in a readers group with other classmates, this is a great option. iChapters offers eBooks and eChapters that you can print out for a low fee.

    Social Networks

How many hours a day are you on Facebook, Twitter or MySpace? Well, you’ve got saving opportunity at your finger tips. Simply change your status or tweet a question about the text you’re looking for and if anyone has it.

If you’re fed up with the insane prices of texts, then all these great resources are your alternative to high prices. Happy shopping!

  • 4 Thrilling Labour Day Weekend Activities

Ready to do something different this Labour Day weekend, Canada? Firing up the grill and kicking back with a cold one is fine and dandy – but the adventurous will be craving something a bit more exciting.

Thankfully, Viator has great deals on a boatload of activities, tours and other adventures, so you can enjoy your Labour Day long weekend without putting a dent in your bank account. Check out what’s in store below and get 7% off with our free coupon:

    British Columbiaziplinewhistler

    Zipline Adventure in Whistler

Those who’ve spent their childhood wishing they were Superman will feel right at home flying above Whistler on a zipline! This tour covers the scenic valley between Whistler and the Blackcomb Mountains, home to wildlife such as lynx, deer, owls and even bears. Beginners can choose a 300 metre zipline, while the more experienced (or courageous!) can choose 600 metres. Think you have the guts?

    Albertawhitewaterrafting

    Kicking Horse White Water Rafting

Summer is coming to an end, so why not celebrate with the ultimate summer activity? This 2-hour excursion through Kicking Horse River begins calmly, but the intensity cranks when the river narrows and the rapids start kicking in. The tour begins with a scenic drive through Yoho National Park, and once the rafting is over you’re whisked off to a delicious barbeque lunch. Consider it a reward for your courage.

    OntarioMaid of the Mist

Niagara Falls Domed Jet Boat Ride

Consider it a scuba diving tour without the ‘getting wet’ part. A domed boat takes you down 29 kilometres of the Niagara River, through the majestic river canyon and right by the crashing waves of Niagara Falls. Torrents of water will be splashing all around you, but you’ll stay bone dry. Be sure to bring a camera.

    Quebecoldmontreal

    Old Montreal Ghost Walking Tour

Think history is boring? Think again. If you’re seeking a spooky way to spend your Labour Day, try a ghost hunt through the streets of Old Montreal. A knowledgeable guide will take you through the city’s most notoriously creepy neighbourhoods, haunted by the likes of deceased thieves, headless lovers and even a witch or two. Now this sounds a real thrill.

Have any other exciting events in mind this Labour Day weekend in Canada?
