Unusual Dessert Recipes for the Holidays

[ 0 ] December 23, 2011

For those who are just too tired of candy canes, pumpkin pies and eggnog, I hear you. My family and friends have a penchant for culinary experimentation, especially around the holidays, so I thought I’d share the best and most unusual holiday and Christmas dessert recipes.

Break out your chef’s hat, iron your apron, and most important of all – expand your horizons. You’ll never know if you like something until you try it!

Korean Flower Cookies

A good friend of mine makes a batch of these adorable confections every December. While she won’t give me her top-secret family recipe (brrr), she says the recipe at the above link is a good approximation. These sweet, cinnamon-y treats are great for anyone who likes their cookies on the chewy side.

Cherry Soup

This is a big Christmas favourite at my household. You will need:

  • 4 cups of water
  • 1 pound of cherries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 dollop of Greek yogurt
  • 3/4 cups of brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup of flour

Bring cherries to a slow boil in water and brown sugar. Once they’re plump, put them on simmer. Stir in flour slowly and whisk to avoid lumps. With the Greek yogurt, you can either add it to the soup while it simmers (mix gently to make sure it incorporates evenly) or wait till the soup cools and garnish it with a spoonful.

Simmer for up to five minutes, cool and serve with a cinnamon stick. If cherries aren’t your thing, you can substitute with your favourite berries, or mix and match. It’ll be yummy either way.

Spicy Mayan Chocolate Cookies

Consider this Christmas cookie recipe the more exotic cousin of salted caramel. The heat in these treats comes from cayenne pepper, which you can adjust as you see fit. Fun tip: make an extra spicy batch and a super mild batch, mix them together and don’t tell anyone which is which.

Chai Gingerbread Bars

If you don’t want to go too out of left field, just put an new twist on a holiday classic. The taste of chai infused in soft, warm gingerbread? There’s a no-brainer. These are especially delicious with a nice cup of tea after you’ve opened all your presents.

Red Bean Cookies (Cantonese Style)

I grew up with red bean desserts and I can’t imagine a Christmas without them. This cookie recipe takes a little more preparation than the others on the list, but trust me, it’ll be worth it. If you have trouble finding some of the more exotic ingredients check out your nearest Chinatown, health food store or farmer’s market.

Are there any ‘unusual’ holiday or Christmas desserts you enjoy? Leave us a comment!

5 Alternative Ideas for Holiday Parties

[ 0 ] December 21, 2011

By now you’re probably pretty holiday partied out. After three or four shindigs, the festive theme can get a little “been there, done that”, not to mention a little rough on the budget. Is your party last on the list? It’s time to take things up a notch and get creative! Here are a few ideas to make your party go from “humbug” to “humdinger”!

Volunteer

Instead of having food and drinks at your place, why not do something for someone else this year? Get your friends together and volunteer at a local food bank or soup kitchen. Not only will you be doing something awesome for your community, but volunteering with your friends will make it that much more fun. It may become something you do again later in the year!

Fundraiser Party

Where a volunteering party takes the event outside of the house, a fundraiser party keeps you warm and cozy by the fire. The cost is a little more, but it’s worth it to get together with friends and raise some money for those less fortunate. Food banks are usually in big need of canned goods at this time, so politely ask people to bring canned goods, or food bank donations instead of gifts. You’ll also have to provide some beverages and finger foods, but the thought is there.

Potluck

If money is super tight this year, have a potluck dinner instead of footing the whole meal yourself. Make sure you assign each guest a particular items (apps, mains, desserts), to avoid getting 6 cheeseballs and 10 containers of cookies. This works especially well for those with chefs in their circle of friends!

Karaoke Party

A karaoke party is both fun and horrible, depending on the calibre of voice talents. But even the worst singers can add valuable entertainment! And duets are always a spotlight during the karaoke party. For true holiday fun, pick up one of the very cheesy karaoke holiday CDs available at Amazon, and don’t forget to save with our Amazon coupon codes.

Holiday Cookie Swap

This is one of my favourite holiday party ideas! How do you do a cookie swap? It’s easy! Each person bakes a dozen cookies per person coming to the party. If there are a lot of people you can always do a half dozen. Then bring them to the party! Everyone gets a dozen (or half) of each cookie. YUM!

Try one of these ideas for your next holiday bash to spice things up a bit! Do you have any fun or unique holiday party ideas?

“Hello Bombshell” Makeup Kit

With 30 eye shadows, 5 lip glosses, 5 lipsticks, 4 blushes, 1 luminous powder, 1 translucent powder, 1 bronzer, 1 mascara, 1 lip liner, 1 eye liner and 5 brushes, she’ll have all the makeup she’ll need for the entire year!

This little product combines body shimmer and sultry fragrance. She’ll fall in love with the blend of vanilla orchid, clementine and blackberry…and you will, too.

Promise! This stuff sounds fantastic! It’s one of my personal faves from Victoria’s Secret’s beauty line.

Halter Babydoll

We can’t have a Victoria’s Secret post without some lingerie! This sexy little number has a bit of stretch, a sexy open back and matching v-string.

The best part? You won’t have to worry about feeling awkward buying lingerie in-store – that’s what online shopping is for!
