This or That – Twilight or The Hunger Games

[ 0 ] August 30, 2011

Noticed something in your local bookstore lately? Yep, it’s been overrun by young adult novels about a young girl trying to choose between two objects of affection. If they all look the same to you, don’t worry, you’re not alone. However, two books have risen above the rest to gain attention (and movie adaptations). Which series has more bite?

THIS:

The Twilight Saga

$62.69, Amazon (Get free shipping)

What can really be said about this cultural phenomenon at this point? You either really hate it or really love it. I’ll summarize the books for those who live under a rock or in a cave: a teenage girl falls in love with a vampire, a werewolf gets mad about it, repeat four times. For fans of supernatural romance novels, it does the job.

I will admit I’m sort of looking forward to the movie adaptation of Breaking Dawn. If you haven’t read the book, at least read the synopsis. It moves far away from Twilight’s usual forbidden romance and into bizarre, David Cronenberg-ian body horror. Can you imagine Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson acting out that birth scene?

…OR THAT:

The Hunger Games Trilogy

$37.60, Amazon (Get free shipping)

Although The Hunger Games shares a few superficial similarities with Twilight (a teenage heroine, a love triangle and forbidding elders), it actually couldn’t be any more different. The series takes place in the post-apocalyptic future where an annual televised event pits two young kids together to fight to the death. Doesn’t sound very sparkly, does it?

The Hunger Games places much more emphasis on heroine Katniss’ struggle for survival than her obsession with boys. It skews a bit older than Twilight does, and fans of Battle Royale will love the everyone-against-each-other plot. However, if you are looking for romance, you’re better off with the vampires.

This or That – Nintendo 3DS or PSP Go

[ 0 ] August 23, 2011

If you’ve never felt the need to stomp evil mushrooms and save princesses as Mario, well… we envy you. We love videogames here at FabulousSavings, so for this week’s This or That, we’re taking a look at two of the most popular handheld gaming devices. Which console will earn an extra life? Keep reading…

THIS:

Nintendo 3DS

$169, Amazon (Get free shipping)

Nintendo’s new kid on the block has a lot to prove, especially in a crowd as discerning as gamers. The hook for the 3DS, obviously, is the ability to view games in 3D without having to use special glasses. It retains the Nintendo DS’ dual screens, adds a handy analog stick and throws in three (!) built-in cameras. In terms of power, the 3DS is a stallion.

Although it’s a relatively new console and its library of games isn’t quite as large as the PSP’s, there are some pretty exciting titles in the works – Resident Evil: Revelations, Animal Crossing 3D, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater and Super Mario 3D Land to name a few. Oh, and Netflix support is on its way, as well as downloadable 3D movies. Just sayin’.

…OR THAT:

Sony PSP Go

$199.99, Amazon (Get free shipping)

Introduced in 2005 as the Sony Playstation Portable, the reinvented PSP Go has a little more mileage than its Nintendo competitor. It also boasts a cleaner design, 16 GB of internal flash memory (as opposed to the 2 GB of the 3DS) and a much larger gaming library.

The PSP Go is arguably more media-friendly, with its handy PC connection and support for video and sound output. However, it lacks a lot of modern touches such as a built-in camera, touch-screen capabilities or gyroscopic motion sensors. But for those who like a portable gaming console with less frills and more games, test drive the Go.

Which portable system would you rather play with during your commute? Drop us a comment!

Introduction to Couponing – How to Coupon in Canada

[ 2 ] August 19, 2011

This is the first post in an 7-part blog series. Each Friday we will break down the different elements of couponing and show you how you can use them to become a savvy couponer in Canada.

So you want to start couponing. Great. And you’re Canadian. Even better! Your head might be swirling with images and stories of Americans reaping the rewards of dedicated couponing,  but you would be surprised to learn that couponing in Canada is a little different. There are still plenty of rewards to be reaped, but in Canada, we’ve got to approach it from a different angle.

If you’re unsure of how to start saving, we’re here to teach you how to coupon in Canada both online and in your neighbourhood stores. Are you ready?

Online Coupons

You might be a little intimidated by online couponing given how new it is to Canada. But there’s no reason to worry, it actually couldn’t be any easier! Just check out our primer on how to navigate a Canadian coupon website:

1. Search to your heart’s content.

So you’ve logged onto the home page, but you can’t quite find the deal you want. Check out how the coupons are categorized – you might see them grouped together as ‘New Coupons’, ‘Coupons by Store’, or ‘Most Popular Coupons’. Be sure to look for a category that features the site’s absolute deals. On FabulousSavings, we have them under Exclusive Coupons.

Most coupon websites will feature a search bar. Even if you might have a specific product in mind, you’ll find the best results if you search by store. For instance, instead of searching for Apple iPod coupons, try “Apple Store coupons”.

2.  Keep an eye out for coupon codes & expiry dates.

While not all online coupons have a set expiry date, it’s important to always check for one! Some sites have a special category for soon-to-expire coupons. On FabulousSavings, we call them Last Minute Deals.

Another detail to watch out for is the coupon code. These are the codes that some merchants require you to type in at checkout. Again, not all coupons have one, but be sure to check by reading the terms of the deal.

3. Click and let the coupon work its online magic.

After you click on the coupon of your choice, most sites will then redirect you to the merchant website (e.g., after clicking an Apple Store coupon, you’ll be directed to the Apple Store online shop). And voila! Unless you’re required to enter a coupon code, the discount has already been applied.

Shop for your items and you’ll see the savings show up once you get to the merchant’s checkout page. It’s like magic. Magic that saves you money.

In-Store Coupons

One of the biggest ways couponing differs between Canada and the United States is the use of physical coupons. The dedicated shoppers of TLC’s Extreme Couponing prove that there’s no end to the lengths some will go to take advantage of the many loopholes of couponing.

These loopholes, for the most part, don’t exist in Canada. Few if any stores allow you to stack coupons and most have a limit over the amount of products you can buy them with. You might have noticed that the weekly grocery flyers you get in mail aren’t exactly bursting with coupons, either.

“So how do I coupon in Canada to begin with?” you ask? Here’s where to start:

1. Watch for grocery store displays.

If you’re miffed over the lack of coupons in weekly flyers, you might not realise most coupons can actually be found in the stores themselves. Considering how huge many grocery aisles are, they can be easy to miss! You can usually find them right next to the product they’re for. Even if you don’t need it right away, grab a few to use during a later trip. Just be sure to note the expiry date!

2. Give a shout to the manufacturers of your favourite products.

Manufacturers are just like you and me – they love a good compliment. Get in touch with the makers of the item of your choice and let them know how much you enjoy their product. Be sincere, of course! Most will be more than happy to send you a few vouchers as a way of saying thanks. You never know, they might just send a few free samples, too.

3. Shopper loyalty programs are your friends!

Many people seem to avoid registering for anything, but it’s definitely worth your time and your money. Are you a movie buff? If you sign up for Cineplex’s Scene Canada card, that’s 10% off concession food and drinks. Lots of grocery chains have members-only coupons and even online deals that you just wouldn’t be aware of if you weren’t signed up. Google or call your local chain to ask about the benefits of their shopper appreciation programs. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

As you can see, learning how to coupon in Canada isn’t hard at all, it just requires you to be a little savvy. Good luck and save big!

This or That – Motorola Photon or Apple iPhone

[ 1 ] August 16, 2011

Even if you’re a modest techie, there’s no doubt that you’ve heard by now of Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility. Big news! Huge news! But it’s news that foreshadows the release of Motorola’s newest smartphone, the Photon 4G.

Because Apple’s iPhone is the benchmark which all smartphones are compared too, it only makes sense that this week’s This or That focuses on one powerhouse and one promising newcomer. So which one will you choose?

THIS:

Motorola Photon 4G

$199 (with plan), Motorola

Also known as the less-catchy XT860, the Motorola Photon packs a surprising amount of power and features into its slim, gunmetal design. The biggest difference (and biggest deal breaker for some) between the Photon and the iPhone is the operating system. The Photon comes with the Google-backed Android and instant access to the Android Market, Google’s online app store.

The Photon ships with 16 GB of memory with a micro-SD expansion slot for up to 48 GB of storage space. That sure is a lot of mirror pictures and drunken videos in 720p! The Photon also supports Flash, Bluetooth and music playability. In other words, it’s an everything-and-the-kitchen-sink type of phone.

…or THAT:

Apple iPhone 4G

$659 (16GB & without plan), Apple (Get free shipping)

The highly revered Apple iPhone may be an industry leader, but you’d be surprised by what it can and can’t do, given its higher cost. It has no option for expandable storage like the Photon,  nor does it have Flash support. It has 512 MB memory as opposed to the Photon’s 1 GB, and its processor speed is only 800MHz (single core) compared to the Photon’s 1GHz (dual core).

But if you’re not a techie and don’t find those numbers meaningful, what does the iPhone have to offer you? For one, a wider and more vivid display, arguably the best display in the industry. Apple’s App Store has legendary support and a much broader range of apps than the Android Market. Lastly, if money isn’t an object for you, there’s nothing quite like the minimalist design, feel and function of the iPhone.

Which device would you rather be answering, the Photon or the iPhone? Tell us!
