Winnipeg Travel

[ 0 ] March 29, 2011

Winnipeg – the Canadian city everyone loves to make fun of. Sure, it may go down to −26.3 °C. It may have lost its one pro hockey team to Phoenix (boo! hiss!). And it may be lovingly referred to as ‘Winterpeg’. But being Manitoba’s capital, Winnipeg has all the good stuff a big city needs – culture, sports and the setting of a Richard Gere movie.

Going in winter? Bring your parka. Fred Penner demonstrates Winnipeg winter weather:

Winnipeg Hotels

Winnipeg accommodations actually cost a bit more than you may think. Prepare to pay at least $100 a night if you want to stay close to downtown somewhere that’s comfortable. Quality Inn & Suites is around that price and was rated the #6 hotel in Winnipeg on Tripadvisor. Also remember to use our free Orbitz Canada coupons to save 5% on your room.

Winnipeg Attractions

Winnipeg has all that a big city has to offer, including a vibrant arts scene. If love music and theatre is your scene, check out what’s playing at the Burton Cummings Theatre for Performing Arts. Or if you love clay and paint, the Winnipeg Art Gallery is sure to excite. It boasts one of the largest collections of Inuit Art in Canada!

Even film and celeb buffs will love this town. Check out a few Winnipeg connections:

  • Shall We Dance & Capote were filmed there
  • Anna Paquin, Randy Bachman & Nia Valdos all at one point called it home
  • Andy, Michael & Oscar spent some time in Winnipeg on an episode of The Office

History

Winnipeg was established in the mid 1700s, making it rich with history. Stop by the Basilique-Cathedrale de Saint Boniface facade, the church of which was destroyed in a fire. A few notable Canadian figures are buried on the grounds including Louis Riel.

Why not learn something on your trip? Go back in time and experience life at a Hudson Bay trading post in the 1800s at the Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site. Costumed interpreters show you what life was like during that time period while you explore one of the best collections of stone buildings in this part of Canada.

Sports & Outdoor Activities

In the fall and summer months, Winnipeg is the perfect place to experience nature at Fort Whyte Alive. Go kayaking, sailing, run the trails or tour the wetlands.

Feeling tired and a bit lazy? Score some tickets to a Winnipeg Blue Bombers CFL team and let someone else do all the work while you cheer them on.

Nightlife

Looking for late night things to do in Winnipeg? For some great grub and a pretty view, the Salisbury House Restaurant should be on your list. It’s situated on the Esplanade Riel Bridge, right on the Red River. After dinner, liven things up a bit by taking a trip to the McPhillips Street Station Casino. Try your luck at the slots, blackjack, Keno, Craps and Texas Hold ‘em.

Winnipeg may get a bad rap, but with all these exciting activities, why not visit Winnipeg? Hey – at least it’s not Flin Flon.

Do you have any Winnipeg travel tips? What’s your favourite Winnipeg sight?

Romance, old-world charm, history, adventure – Quebec City has it all. Scrap the rumour that Quebecois are snobby, I’ve been there myself and they showed me an awesome time! So check out our list of must-see attractions, hotels and more.

Where to Stay

Quebec City is home to the most photographed hotel in the world: Le Chateau Frontenac. With luxurious European decor, fine dining and heart-of-the-city location, staying at this hotel is a dreamy experience. I also heard it’s haunted, so bring your night-vision goggles and a recorder!

If you’re visiting from January to March, book an unforgettable stay at Hotel de Glace, the Ice Hotel. Stay in a room made entirely of ice while sitting by the warm fireplace. And as much as the kid inside you might want to – don’t put your tongue on the wall.

Apply Orbitz coupons for 5% off your stay at these or other hotels!

Historical Sights

Whether you’re visiting during the cool or warm months, historical spots like Artillery Park, The Citadel, Plains of Abraham and the Parliament Building await you. Learn about Canadian heritage, Quebec’s military history including prisons that date back to the 1800s and more.

City Walks

The romantic old-world charm of Quebec City streets brings a warmth to your heart. Enjoy walking on your own along these streets:

  • Rue St. John – fashion boutiques & souvenir shopping
  • Rue de Tresor - art galleries with charcoal or oil paintings
  • Grande Allee – restaurants & cafes with delicious desserts & cuisine

Some people like to learn in-depth detail about what they’re seeing. If you’re one of those travellers, then enjoy the Quebec City Walking Tour: a 2-hour guided tour through the streets of Quebec City! Get 7% off this tour using free Viator coupons.

Dining

Enjoy a hearty burger or roast-beef sandwich? Chez Ashton on the Grande Allee is your spot. For a more sophisticated scene, head to Savini-Resto Bar, also on Grande Allee. It offers tantalizing Italian cuisine, exquisite wines and delectable desserts.

Still looking for something a little more exciting? No problem! Get dressed up and board the Quebec City Dinner Cruise that runs from June to September. Enjoy drinks, fine dining and dancing at 7% off using free Viator coupons.
