Student on a Budget: Where to Find Textbooks in Canada

[ 0 ] August 31, 2010

Books 2

It’s that time of year again; time to stock up on texts for university. Dreading the dent it’s gonna leave in your bank count? I don’t blame you. But I can help you!

I was in university for 5 years, and my books were a huge $500 of my budget for the year (sometimes more!) By year three, I found new ways to buy books in Canada on the cheap. Now I’m sharing my tips with you…

Cheap Used Textbooks at School

  • School bookstore - Most university book stores provide a section on used books at lower prices. The problem is: they can sell out fast, so try getting there at least one month before the semester begins.
  • Hallway Bulletin Boards – Most students are in the same boat as you are: saving up to buy their texts. Some students sell texts they’re done with at a low price to pay for their own books. So keep an eye out for notes on bulletins.

Online Text Book Stores in Canada

Write down all the ISBN numbers of the texts required – it makes online searching faster. Then visit these online book stores to buy books that ship to Canada. And to make things even more affordable, I’ve included coupons for you:

  • Amazon.ca – up to 37% off new textbooks (coupon for free shipping on $39 or more)
  • AbeBooks – up to 90% off new & used books (coupon free domestic shipping on select books)
  • Alibiris – up to 30% off new textbooks (coupon for $10 off $100 or more)

TIP: Do your research before visiting any online bookstore. Use helpful tools like Booksprice.com where you can see the online stores your book is available at plus compare prices!

Borrow or Rent Your Texts

  • Borrow – Visit the library to see if they offer the texts you need. Most libraries offer renewal options so you can keep the book for longer periods of time. The only downfall with this option is that there will be a limited amount of books offered.
  • Rent – One of the easiest ways to save money on texts is by renting them. eCampus.com lets Canadian students rent their texts for low fees. Better yet, if you have any texts from previous years, you can sell them to eCampus.com and use that cash to rent new ones. Done and done!

Printable Books or Chapters Online

  • Printable Books – Want to avoid heavy texts all together? Take a load off with help from Project Gutenburg. They offer printable eBooks online for free – yup, free!  All they ask is that you leave a small donation that you can afford so that they can keep providing this free service.
  • Printable Chapters - If you’re in a readers group with other classmates, this is a great option. iChapters offers eBooks and eChapters that you can print out for a low fee.

Social Networks

How many hours a day are you on Facebook, Twitter or MySpace? Well, you’ve got saving opportunity at your finger tips. Simply change your status or tweet a question about the text you’re looking for and if anyone has it.

If you’re fed up with the insane prices of texts, then all these great resources are your alternative to high prices. Happy shopping!

Do you have any tips to share on how to find cheap textbooks?

As Fall returns, it’s no surprise to see that it’s brought its good friend Camel back with it. Camel is a classic colour that transitions well throughout every season but finds a nice home in Autumn, when its rich ochre shade acts as a perfect transition from summer pastels.

5 Fall 2010 Boot Trends for Women

[ 2 ] August 25, 2010

The cold weather is fast approaching, and the days of sandals and flip flops are soon to be over. While it may seem depressing now, when you see the boots for Fall 2010, you’ll be itching for the new season to begin.

Here are five 2010 fall boot trends to help you stay in style. These boots are sure to lift your cool weather spirits. So, check them out! Once you see them you’ll be throwing off those worn-out flip flops!

OliviaUtility

This Fall, boots are looking tough. Military and utility styles are taking the runways by storm. Pair these with feminine accessories to give your outfit some contrast. Or, pair these boots with matching utility style accessories to make a strong statement.

Olivia, $350 USD, 7 for all Mankind (see our 7 for all Mankind coupons).

Belle by Sigerson MorrisonLacing

This is a huge trend for fall fashion boots. The lacing trend is everywhere you look…and it’s not even Fall yet! Personally, this one isn’t my favourite. It reminds me of the boots my mom used to wear (sorry, mom).  But, the stylists, magazines and bloggers seem to be loving it. What do you think? Would you wear this trend?

Belle by Sigerson Morrison, $350 USD, Saks Fifth Avenue (see our Saks Fifth Avenue Canada coupons).

Dan Post Boots MignonCowboy

These boots are great fall fashion statements. As an added bonus, they can be fabulous summer footwear. Pair these with a flirty summer dress while it’s still hot. Then pull em’ over your favourite pair of skinny jeans as the weather cools down.

Don Post Boots Mignon, $158.95 USD, Shoebuy (see our Shoebuy coupons).

Moss Leather Thigh High BootsOver the Knee

This trend requires confidence to pull off. But, when it works – boy, does it work! This sexy style can be toned down by wearing a pair of matching tights underneath. Or, if you dare, pair them with an above the knee skirt.

Moss Leather Thigh High Boots, $298 USD, bebe (see our bebe Canada coupons).

House of Harlow 1960Lady Like and Lacey

Lace is another trend that’s all over the runways. But unlike the lacing trend, as seen above, this is a look that I can actually get behind. When done right, lace boots can look polished and pretty – with a little added sex appeal.

House of Harlow 1960, $275 USD, Saks Fifth Avenue (See our Saks Fifth Avenue Canada coupons).

Which is you favourite boot trend?
