This or That: Chef Knives

[ 0 ] July 28, 2010

When stocking your kitchen, there’s one item to splurge on. It’s going to slice, dice and chop everything from veg to fish. It’s a chef knife, and it’s going to be your best friend in the kitchen. Are all chef knives built the same? Definitely not, but you don’t have to get a second mortgage to get an awesome chef knife. Let’s compare!

THIS:

henckelschefknife

Henckel 8″ Chef’s Knife

$139.95, Cooking.com

One of the most well-known knife brands on the market right now is Henckel. Endorsed by the Iron Chef, the Henckel 6″ Chef’s Knife offers a D-shape handle for utmost control and a 19 degree cutting edge. And because you have to look good in the kitchen, the multi-layered steel makes it a fine looking accessory.

…or THAT:

victorinoxchefknife

Victorinox Swiss Army 7-inch Forged Steel Santoku Chef’s Knife

$65.95, Overstock (5% off)

For way less than the price of the Henckel is the Victorinox Swiss Army 7″ Forged Steel Santoku Chef’s Knife. This knife is a hybrid of both the cleaver and a chef’s knife and is definitely at the top of a lot of chef lists. The Victorinox offers a Granton edge so food doesn’t stick to the blade, and the triple-rivet handle is ergonomic and creates balance within the knife. A rivet handle is a definite when choosing a good chef’s knife.

This or That – Bare Escentuals vs. Avon Smooth Minerals Foundation

[ 0 ] July 26, 2010

About a year ago, I fell in love with Bare Minerals Foundation by Bare Escentuals. But after three months when I needed a refill, the $25 for the 6 g jar hurt a little. I knew I liked mineral-based foundations, but there had to be a way to spend less. That’s when I found out about Smooth Minerals Foundation by Avon. I got the same coverage, same light feel and matte finish for less!

THIS:

Bare Minerals FoundationBare Escentuals – bareMinerals Foundation

$25, Bare Escentuals

bareMinerals Foundation comes in 20 shades. It’s easy to apply, offers a matte finish that hides imperfections like red blotches and oily patches. It’s also free of oil, talc and fragrances and offers SPF 15 protection. I loved that it felt like I had nothing on; there was no cakey feel whatsoever.

…or THAT:

Avon Smooth MineralsAvon Smooth Minerals

$14.99, Avon ($1 shipping on orders over $35)

The only real flaw is that this mineral-based foundation doesn’t offer SPF protection (but most facial moisturizers or primers do, so just apply some beforehand). Smooth Minerals comes in 12 shades and, like bareMinerals, doesn’t contain oil, talc or fragrances.  I experience the same no-makeup feel with this lightweight, full-coverage foundation.

Kodak Gallery – 20% off Sitewide ’til 7/26

[ 0 ] July 23, 2010

kodakgalleryphotobooks

The gist of this post is that Kodak Gallery is running a big sale where you’ll get 20% off sitewide until July 26 — but let me tell a little story first.

Karina here at the office is a big traveller. While we got to see (literally 100s of) photos from her last trip on Facebook, she also brought a few select photos into the office — in a photo book. Maybe the majority of us live under a rock or something, but none of us had seen a photo book before. It was nicely bound and showcased her best photographs elegantly with nice captions underneath.

As a result, a lot of us have turned photo memories of our favourite trips and occasions into photo books for our own coffee tables and our relatives’ (they make a great holiday gift for grandparents).

SO, that being said, with Kodak Gallery’s 20% off sale, you can said 20% on photo book creation, as well as:

  • Make-your-own calendars
  • Personlised mugs
  • Canvas prints using your pics (so much better than stock art, don’t you think?)

Ready? Set? Use the coupon.
