Last-Minute Entertainers – Here Are Some Food Ideas for a Halloween Party!

[ 0 ] October 30, 2009

Costume? Check! Decor? Check! Entertainment? Check! Food? Oops! Not to worry, I’m here to help with food ideas for a Halloween party. I find the biggest issue for entertainers is to create new dishes to serve that they haven’t already tried. So here are some quick and good Halloween party food ideas that are sure to have guests’ heads turning (not literally!).

Appetizers

Finger Dogs -This finger food appetizer is so good for your wallet. Depending on how many people you invite, you’ll only need 1 or 2 packages of hot dogs since you’ll be cutting them in half or thirds. After you cook them, slice the tops and insert a piece of cheese for the fingernail. Don’t forget the ketchup, I mean blood…muahaha!

Main Course

Spaghetti Worms – Looking for Halloween party foods the kids will eat up? I know my nephew loves spaghetti because he has fun slurping it. I’ve always thought that spaghetti resembled worms! Pasta in general is a great option to serve at parties because it’s cheap and filling so you can make large amounts without breaking the bank. I recommend serving it with red sauce and mini meatballs, about the size of an eyeball…

Mash Potato Brains – Sounds delightful, huh? This idea is super simple as you can use whatever mashed potato recipe you normally use (make sure they’re extra lumpy). Place the mashed potatoes on a silver platter, wear plastic gloves, and start molding it into a brain. To make the indentations of the membrane come to life, uncoil a paperclip and press it against the brain. If you’re inviting a big group, make two mashed potato brain platters and have one at each end of the table.

Dessert

Chocolate Worm Mudslide – Ever year on Halloween, my mom would make a batch of this ghoulish dessert and my friends would go bonkers over it! She bought regular chocolate Jell-O pudding packages and sour candy worms. Once your pudding has set, drop in the worms and mix it up. Serve them in small ice cream cobbler cups, and your guests will be in for a treat!

Candy Dessert Pizza – This is a great way to use your candy. Buy premade cookie dough, or if you’re a master baker, mix up a batch. Spread the cookie dough in a round pizza pan and bake it off. Buy or make some simple icing, spread it over the pizza and sprinkle your favourite candy all over.

Hope you enjoy these Halloween food ideas! If you have any quick and fun recipe ideas, please share!

How to Save Money on Phone Bills & Avoid Dreaded High Costs

[ 2 ] October 27, 2009

So my cell phone bill came in this week, and to my astonishment, it was $65 over. Grand total for the month, $105. Wow! Despite the fact that I’m signed up to one of those discount cell phone plans, I still pay more than I need to. Join me as we both try to learn how to save on phone bills!

How to Save Money On Your Phone Bill

1) Phone Plans – When I got my first cell phone, I was on one of the most inexpensive phone plans – pay as you go. Eventually, I gave into a contract. The first two years were great until I decided to add on new features. The only feature I do like is the unlimited incoming calls. So if I need to talk to someone when it’s not free for me, I send them an email or text message telling them to call me.

Moral of the story: Find a flat-rate plan or try pay as you go if you’re really strapped for cash. Limit your add-on features by deciding which ones you need most. See if your carrier offers a one month free trial of features. After that month, see which ones you used the most.

2) Bundle Up! – Another idea to save money on cell phone bill is to bundle your services. I’m at an advantage because I do live at home still which means I bundled my and my dad’s cell phones, cable and internet. Think about switching everything to one company because they may offer a reduced rate. If you run into issues with them, you can threaten to leave and they’ll most definitely do anything to accommodate you (muahaha).

3) Limit Talk Time – I know it’s hard to do this especially if what you’re hearing is juicy gossip. However, it may be a good idea to avoid using your cell phone if you’re at home or work. Instead use a landline phone that’s sitting right on your desk or nightstand!

Another important tip is if you work nights or have other nightly obligations, consider free daytime calling instead of a free after 6pm or 9pm plan. If you’re on a free after 9pm plan and find yourself using your phone at 5 or 6pm when you leave work, switch to early evening calling! Doing this may cost you a few bucks more; however, it saves you more in the long run.

4) Long Distance Calling – Keeping in touch with those far and wide can be hard and costly. If you must call long distance, call your landline provider and invest in a plan through them. Or buy prepaid long distance calling cards. For $5 or $10, you receive 200 to 300 minutes. Get the person you’re calling to buy their own cards too and take turns buying them.

Or check out services like Vonage and Skype offer VoIP technology so you can talk and chat in real time at a fraction of the cost. And if you both have webcam, you can video chat.

It’s Not Too Late to Make Your Own Halloween Costume

[ 1 ] October 22, 2009

I am big on making my own costume because other than the fact that I’m super frugal, I’m also creative and thus prefer full creative control when it comes to my Halloween costume. Homemade is the way to go! Check below for tips and ideas on creating top homemade Halloween costumes:

Spooky

Last year, beauty frugalista, Cristina came dressed in a corpse bride costume which she handmade using old white curtains that she transformed into a wedding dress. However, what really made her look unique was the amazing makeup job.

To achieve the zombie or gothic look, here are some things to look for that cost you nothing:

  • Tattered t-shirts or pants with rips, tears or holes (the more, the merrier)
  • Pajamas or nightgowns for a “back from the dead” vibe
  • Use brown makeup for a dirt-like effect

Pop Culture Icons

This year, a pop culture homemade Halloween costume choice seems to be Michael Jackson. He had so many classic looks throughout the 80s and 90s. You can find these essential pieces in yours or a friend’s 80s wardrobe, the local thrift store or vintage shop:

  • Leather bomber jacket (fake leather is fine)
  • Black flood pants & white t-shirt
  • Thick white socks & black shoes

Another idea is to dress up as characters from Twilight. This is a super simple idea because they look and dress like regular teenagers! For that vampire-esque feel, buy white powder makeup which costs no more than $3, or chip in with a friend and share it. You definitely won’t need the whole thing!

Tongue-in-Cheek

I love costumes that are a play on words. Last year I was queen bee. I used a black dress I owned and cut strips of yellow felt and sewed them onto the dress. I accessorized with dollar-store-bought wings, fake jewellery, crown and boa and a thrift-store-bought wig. I spent approximately $15.

Other humourous homemade Halloween costumes are:

  • Bag of jelly beans – blow up multi-coloured balloons, dress in monochromatic colours & stick them on
  • Adam & Eve – wear all brown or beige tights & a turtleneck for the flesh body & cut out felt leaves for body parts

Halloween may be in a week; however, there are plenty of homemade Halloween costumes to replicate. The ones mentioned are just a small sample of what’s out there! If you have any, I’d love to hear them as I have not yet chosen my costume!
