Dining In vs. Dining Out: How Can Cooking at Home Save Money?

Last summer, my friend and I decided to pop into a trendy restaurant for coffee and dessert. I ordered a warm waffle with chocolate ice cream, brownies and whipped cream. Average price: $9.50.  I received my dessert to see it was none other than frozen waffles, the kind I bought as a kid. Average retail price: $2.99.

Why Save Money Cooking at Home?

Since then, my friends and I have been saving dinner outings for special occasions and opting for homecooked meals. Gas, transit fare, food taxes, alcoholic drinks and the TIP are all things that add up. Imagine how much you’d save pitching in for groceries with friends and collaboratively cooking separate dishes for a complete meal. Doing this will produce leftovers for tomorrow’s lunch or dinner. SCORE!

How Can Cooking at Home Save Money?

Here are some money saving cooking ideas and shopping tips to remember:

  • Plan – Take an inventory of what you have, make a list of what’s on sale and what you need. Then shop at a discount grocery store (this saves you a bundle on your bill.)
  • Separate & Freeze – Growing up, I used to see my mom separating meat, putting it in plastic bags and freezing it. I had no idea what she was doing till now. Use what you need and freeze the rest for later use.
  • Coupons  - Shop with flier or online coupons. Use Indigo Books & Music coupons to receive free shipping on orders of $39 or more. Invest in a cookbook with a mix of recipes, and when you want to try something new, go online for free recipes or try the library.

Recreating the Experience

If you don’t find your meals as tasty as the restaurant, show up to a free cooking lesson or demonstration offered by many chain grocery stores. Or next time you’re out for dinner, take a mental picture of what’s inside the dish. Some restaurants go as far as listing what’s inside on the menu.

For some people, dining out is a big part of their entertainment budget, so I’m not suggesting you completely stop doing what you love. If you’re limited with your budget, think about your alternatives. If you love dinner + movie nights, consider staying in for a movie and going out for dinner or vice versa.
